Acne and Sleep - Is There
A Connection?

Is Lack of Sleep Causing Your Acne?

No, but there is a definite connection between acne and sleep.

Not getting enough sleep or having sleep difficulties can :

"Make you more prone to pimples. Lack of sleep can contribute to acne and other skin problems."  [Source : National Sleep Foundation]

Clear Skin
If you're an acne sufferer, sleep deprivation can bring on more frequent and more severe acne outbreaks, and skin problems.

What's more, sleep deprivation can also cause a lot of general health problems including stress, another great enemy of acne sufferers.

Getting enough quality sleep is just one of the things you have to do to restore hormonal balance and keep your acne outbreaks to a minimum. Do this, and you will see a difference.

Acne and Sleep Connection .....

The importance of sleep cannot be overlooked. What is most important of all is not the amount of sleep you get, but the quality. Some people feel refreshed with just a few hours, while others never fully wake up all day in spite of how much sleep they get. This is where proper relaxation comes in. You have to learn to unwind for at least a couple of hours before going to bed at night, there's no point trying to sleep with an overactive mind.

Sleep deprivation can result in many problems with our health in general, which can have an indirect effect on our acne. Most notably are two of the main contributing factors : Increased inflammation and an increase in insulin resistance. An increase in insulin produces more androgens, which in turn makes the sebaceous glands more active, and they produce more oil.

This chain reaction continues with increased inflammation, and before you know it, your acne is back with a vengeance. It should be obvious by now that acne is more than just a skin condition, and that's why using creams, lotions and cleansers are simply not enough to have any long term effect.

Problems With Lack of Sleep .....

Problems with sleep deprivation just go on and on. We've already looked at some of the effects that lack of sleep can have on acne, including stress, inflammation, and increased insulin resistance. But lack of sleep can throw our whole system out of sorts. Feeling run down is not good for the skin, and stress can lead to depression, setting up another bad chain reaction.

Feeling tired all the time can cause problems at work, trying to keep up to speed, and problems at home. Our failure to keep up with demands and expectations often result in worry. This can lead to other factors that have an indirect effect on acne, like lack of exercise, dehydration, and erratic eating habits. There is a connection between Acne and Diet, and there are certain foods that are good for acne, and some that are bad.

Clinical studies have also shown a connection between Acne and Stress, so, can you see how lack of sleep can lead to this downward spiral?

Look At The Big Picture .....

To summarise, there is definitely a connection between acne and sleep, but that's only one small piece of the puzzle, as I'm sure you can see.

Acne is caused primarily by hormonal imbalance, which could be due to any or all of the factors mentioned here. That's why a holistic approach should be taken to treat acne successfully. Can you see why this makes sense?

You have to address ALL POSSIBLE CAUSES, not just acne and sleep.

This may sound difficult, and it is, unless you have a system to follow.

The best system I've come across with a holistic approach to curing your acne is Mike Walden's Acne No More ebook. This book will take you by the hand and guide you through every step of detox, diet, managing stress, and everything you need to do to be acne free in around two months. The small investment will pay off handsomely if you follow the system rigidly.
